The main purpose of the lens is protection against ultraviolet radiation and other harmful wavelengths of light. Without any type of protection, the dark lens can be even worse, as it causes the eyes to stop using some defense mechanisms and receive these rays even more.
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation can damage eye tissue. Sunlight burns our eyes, from the surface to the retina. This damage can result in corneal and ocular surface disease, cataract formation, and retinal degeneration.
Sunglasses can prevent this damage, but not all sunglasses provide the same level of protection. UV 400 means these lenses block wavelengths less than 400 nm/0, which includes all UVA and UVB rays.
